Covid relieve payments and Nursing home Medicaid

By Terry Savage on June 20, 2021 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Than you for this oppertunity to ask this here.
My mom is in a nusing home under Medicaid care. She is allowed only (if I recall corectly) $2000 in her savings. Understandably so, Medcaid takes all but $30/month of here SS monthly payment for her care now.
Mom recieved three Covid relieve checks totaling $3,200 deposited to her checking account. at the time of each deposti recieved, I transfered each to savings so now her savings in excess of the $2000.
I understand this is tax free but,
is it free from the Medicaid requirements as part of her care?
Thank you, Sincerely!

Terry Says

No, it is NOT without impact on Medicaid. This money is not taxes, and cannot be taken by Medicaid for her care. But she cannot have more than $3,000 in her name. So figure out a way to buy something or use it for her care. How about a prepaid funeral plan, which is exempt. Or prepay a series of hair care appointments, podiatric treatments, massages — with providers you can trust to fulfill those prepaid pledges over the next year. Or simply move the money out of her name to be used for her future care. Medicaid –when it gets its act together — will do something stupid like disqualify her for having too much in assets.
