Ask Terry Questions How to Gift I Bonds

How to Gift I Bonds

By Terry Savage on October 22, 2022 | Chicken Money

Hi Terry!
I’m interested in purchasing I Bonds for my children, but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to buy them under my name or under theirs. I’m a little concerned that if I buy them under their name it’ll have a negative impact on their future loan power (student loans, etc.). What do you suggest?

Terry Says

You can buy them and put them in a “gift box” and not distribute them. So it won’t impact assets on the FAFSA financial aid form.
This treasury video will be helpful: https://treasurydirect.gov/indiv/tools-videos/purchase-gift-bonds/

The bonds can stay in your gift box (see last tab at top of your TD account page) as long as you want.

Then watch this second video. When it’s time to “deliver” the bonds, perhaps at college graduation, this video shows you how to do it!
