Taxes

By Terry Savage on October 08, 2024 | Wild Card

Terry, I got married in 2023 and filed jointly with my husband. The expected refund was applied to taxes the he had not paid for at least 3 years before we got married. How do I handle this? Is this an “injured spouse” situation? Thank you!

Terry Says

Nope this is a dumb spouse situation!

When you marry someone, you marry their entire financial situation — unless you agree to keep your money separate and file separately. That’s why I co-authored the book “The New Love Deal: Everything You MUSY Know Before Marrying, Moving In, or Moving On”. It is available on Amazon.

Your new husband owes you this money. How you get it back from him is up to you!
