Medicare Choices after job loss

By Terry Savage on March 19, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

My Husband will be losing his job in June, which means we won’t have his health insurance. We both have Medicare part A. Is it best we try to get more coverage thru Medicare or join one of those plans you see on TV? I am 69 he will be 68 in May? And, if thru Medicare what parts? Thank You and sorry for bothering you, I just need guidance.

OMG — this is the most important decisions you will make in retirement. You need much more information. I’ve been writing about this topic — traditional Medicare vs Medicare Advantage — for the past few years.
Please first read this column: https://www.terrysavage.com/disadvantages-of-medicare-advantage/

And if you search under “columns” at my website using the term Medicare Advantage, you’ll learn a lot more.
There is so much confusion about this. I have one resource I know you can trust to explain the two programs, and help you decide as well as finding you each a Medicare Supplement and Part D drug plan. Please contact Thomas Dillon at JTMedicareSolutions.com.

Get the process started immediately so you have time to understand the alternatives. You don’t have to wait for open enrollment because he is losing his coverage. My personal advice is always to stick with original Medicare (for the reasons mentioned many times in my columns) and to immediately apply for Supplement Plan G (the most coverage) and Part D (for drugs). If you can afford it, you’ll be glad you have this coverage down the road if you become ill.
