Old Currency

By Terry Savage on March 19, 2025 | Wild Card

Hi Terry
When I was cleaning out my fathers house I found some old currency (100, 50, 20, and 10’s). If I try to spend them at stores, people look at me like I’m trying to pass off counterfeit money. What do you suggest I do with these bills? Will the bank accept them? Most of the currency is from the 60’s and 70’s. Are they worth more than face value?

Terry Says

No, the “old” paper currency in circulation from the 60s and 70s has no special collectors value. (Larger, old bills certainly do have collectors value, and you can find out more at the website of the American Numismatic Association, Money.org.)

You bank will be happy to exchange them for new, clean bills if you bring them in. But don’t bring in more than $5,000 at any one time, because of currency reporting rules!
