Financial help for medical bills

By Terry Savage on March 22, 2025 | Wild Card

My granddaughter is six months old. When she was three months old, she was rushed to Lurie’s Children’s Hospital with what was later determined to be a rare blood disorder. My daughter (her mother) has health insurance that covers much of the costs for the continued treatment. However, there is still a lot of out of pocket expenses for various hospitals, labs, and doctors’ visits. Is there a company or organization to assist with or advise on medical financial help? She has already applied for financial assistance with the hospitals, and they stated that they cannot provide any additional help.

Terry Says

Oh, this is so difficult. Even people with insurance find that it doesn’t cover everything. My first suggestion was going to be to contact the hospital. She could also see if there is a foundation for that specific blood disorder, one that might enroll the child in testing program or drug trial, which would cover some of the expenses.
Or if she is already on a drug regiment, definitely reach out to the drug manufacturer.

If the bills really pile up, you can contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling at 800-388-2227. They often reach out to creditors and help negotiate lower payments, or waiver of some charges or back interest. You can trust them completely. The toll-free number connects you to the nearest local office.

And I don’t know if this would apply since she already has insurance, and I’m assuming you live in Illinois, so it might be worth reaching out to this Illinois Children’s Insurance program:

Please write back and let me know if any of this eventually helps.
