Ask Terry Questions Starting/stopping 401k RMDs

Starting/stopping 401k RMDs

By Terry Savage on April 03, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

If I retire and start taking RMDs from my 401k, can I stop taking RMDs from that 401k if I go back to work for that employer as either an employee or consultant?

Terry Says

The law says you are not required to take RMDs from your current employer’s plan. The way I read it, you would not have to take an RMD — even if you took a break from your job. But you couldn’t be a consultant. That doesn’t make you an employee. I wouldn’t fool around with this if I were you!
