Ask Terry Questions SS spousal support

SS spousal support

By Terry Savage on April 03, 2025 | Social Security

Hi Terry,
I have been retired for approx 3 years and collecting my SS benefits I worked for over 47 years and currently that is my only income.
I heard that I could be eligible for spousal benefits. He too is retired and gets ss & a pension benefits.
He is blind so I am his caretaker. I have been for for over 12 years.
Can you advice if this is true.
Thank you in advance

I’m sorry, but you only qualify for either YOURS or half of his, but not both SS benefits. If you became a widow, you would get the larger of the two benefits.
BUT there are so many benefits available to low income people. Have you consulted your state department on aging?
If you are an ILlinois resident, here is the link: https://ilaging.illinois.gov/benefitsaccess.html
Check to see if there are other benefits, or respite care, for which you could qualify.

You are truly doing God’s work.
