Ask Terry Questions SSA/Disability

SSA/Disability

By Terry Savage on April 03, 2025 | Social Security

Hi Terry. I have applied for disability and my final (third) review is coming up in June after 2 years. In the meantime I have turned 62. Should I take my reduced SSA now while waiting for a possible favorable SSDI award or will taking a reduced SSA affect any future disability award and any back pay?

Thank you for all your money info; you are providing a great service to the community;. I listen to you all the time on WGN.

Terry Says

It depends on which is larger. If you DO get SSDI, I think it will be larger — and automatically convert to your earned SS benefits at your full retirement age.

If you don’t get disability, then go ahead and take SS early, though your benefit will be significantly reduced.
