Social Security online services

By Terry Savage on April 18, 2025 | Social Security

According to a letter I received :” On March 21 ,2025 , you successfully initiated an online account with the Social Security Administration, or upgraded to an advanced account. Please follow the steps below to finish setting up your online account or to upgrade your account. The letter then listed 7 steps which if followed would successfully create an online account or upgrade to an advanced account. I did initiate this inquiry on the date above but when I was passed into a second set of options to further my identity I became confused about the options and left the website! Because I started this process am I required to complete the confusing upgrade request to ensure that my benefit checks continue to be processed? Thank you for any assistance .

No. Opening, or not opening, an online account will have no impact on your benefits. I’m assuming you want them to keep coming to the same bank account.
You only need an online account if you want to change banks, or make some other changes to your SS.
If not needed immediately, I’d advise waiting until things settle down to open an online account.
