elderly aunt social security fraud

By Terry Savage on August 14, 2021 | Wild Card

My 87 yr old aunt lives with us and she recently got an irs letter stating it would take a few months for her social security money to be deposited to her new account. Her 93 year old sister I. Law also got the same letter. They did not make this request. How can we check on this? Or is it a scam ? The letters looked legitimate
Thanks

That is definitely a scam. They probably asked for her to “contact” someone to “verify” her deposit info. And that leads to identity theft! So I hope they didn’t fall for it.
Read this article from SSA.gov regarding these scams.
I’m assuming that their checks will continue to be direct deposited to their accounts. If for some reason the money doesn’t land there on time, then contact SSA immediately.
