IRS letter indicating ‘We haven’t received your tax return’ — Good Advice from Reader!

By Terry Savage on February 07, 2022 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
Since opening my new irs account I’ve logged in several times a day, looking for confirmation that the irs has finally processed my ‘unfiled’ (ie, per their December 2021 CP80 notice) 2020 return.
This morning my confirmation arrived!!! All 4 irs transcripts for 2020 have now appeared in my account. The numbers in the transcripts check out OK and my 2020 return’s status is now ‘filed’.
IRS agent #3, who urged me to open the account and to use the account to monitor the status of my 2020 return (without re-submitting a copy), was right on the money! Thank you, Mr. ***!!!

Incidentally, yesterday I was selected for the irs survey, regarding my ability to use the account to complete my business. My survey responses were only marginally satisfactory, because the account can only be used to look for new transcript information – not to ask questions or receive messages. And the taxpayer’s history (from irs telephone contacts) is not visible in his account. I added these comments to my survey response.

Is it a coincidence that yesterday’s marginally favorable survey response was followed by today’s confirmation that irs has finally processed my return? Probably – but I don’t think it hurts to point out to the irs that the account could be made to function even better than it does right now.

I urge your readers in similar straits to open an irs account and use it to monitor their return’s status. It’s much faster than a phone call. And you can quickly download your return’s transcripts when they appear.
Finally, take the survey and add your comments – with some upgrades, the irs account may work even better next time you need to use it.
Thank you, Terry, for all the help you give us!

Thank you to our reader for following this latest advice. If the above confuses you, here’s how to open an IRS account, safely and securely. (And if your credit is “frozen” don’t worry because that is not an issue!)

Go to www.IRS.gov and at the home page, click on “sign in to your account”. Yes, I know you don’t already have an account! Strange, but that’s how you get to the page to CREATE and IRS Id.me account!
Or use this link to get directly to that page.

Then, when you have your own IRS account you can see the latest info on your return, payments, etc. As noted by my reader above, it may take a few log-ins until everything is updated. But for those who have been trying to call, this is how to get the latest info from the IRS!
