Medicare eligibility — need advice

By Terry Savage on May 21, 2021 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Hi Terry
Since my husband worked
For Cook County
His entire career he never
Paid into Medicare/Social Security. He turns 65 this August. Since I am 59 he doesn’t qualify under me either.
We understand he has to pay for Part A and B. Cook County will take care of Part D.
My question is does Medicare ever deny you coverage when you have a pre-existing condition?
Thank You

Terry Says

Generally speaking, Medicare itself – -either the original or Advantage plans — cover all preexisting conditions. But I couldn’t find info on whether the “buy-in” plan covers pre-existing conditions:

However, Medicare doesn’t cover everything in any case. You need a supplement. And if you buy the supplement in the first six months of becoming eligible for Medicare, you cannot be turned down for the best supplement because of pre-existing conditions. So if you’re opting for traditional Medicare, be sure to get the supplement at the same time, right away!

A Medicare Advantage plan might be less expensive, but you’d be limited to the hospitals and physicians in that plan. And with a pre-existing condition, you’d want to check that list.

This is an important life-long decision, so I want to make sure you get the most accurate advice. Making a mistake could be so costly.
