Roth IRA for granddaughter?

Best Roth IRA for teenage granddaughter

Terry Says

You can’t open a ROTH IRA for a teenage granddaughter — unless she is working and earning money! And if you put money in her name even as a gift, it will weigh 7x as heavily against the family if she applies for financial aid for college!
Please write back — I need more details about what you are trying to accomplish here. Maybe the best thing is to open a 529 College Savings Account for her future use, and it won’t have nearly as much impact on the aid formula if you think she will go to college. But I need details if you want real advice.
