Series HH Bonds matured, cashing them in?
HI Terry,
I have a Series HH Savings Bond in which I am named along with a deceased relative. The bond states that interest ceases 20 years from 2001 and shows a deferred interest amount. I am interested in cashing out the bonds, but I do not have access to any account with which they may be connected . Have I lost the interest that the bonds were to accrue? Also, TreasuryDirect advised to mail the bonds along with a completed form. Is there another way to cash them without relying on the US mail?
Thank you!

I assume you have read all the instructions on this page at the TreasuryDirect website:
https://www.treasurydirect.gov/savings-bonds/cashing-a-bond/hh-savings-bonds/
You must submit the required documentation, along with proof of death of the deceased. And you can send the paperwork by registered mail, return receipt requested, to the Treasury. It could take as long as two months to get your money. But you will get the full interest that accrued over the years. (And remember, you will pay tax on that interest as ordinary income in the year you cash them in!)
