Ask Terry Questions Social Security

Social Security

By Terry Savage on April 09, 2025 | Social Security

Hi Terry, I am retired and collecting my Social Security which isn’t very much. My husband retired after me and receives more. Is it possible for me to get one half of his Social Security by giving back mine and taking the monthly 1/2 of his but he still gets his whole amount too.Thank you! We watch you all the time

Terry Says

You are entitled to your own benefit OR half of his — whichever is higher.
In normal times, you would just call Social Security to make the change. But that’s almost impossible mow. Be prepared for a long wait!
