I have applied for Surviving Spouse benefits under the Fairness Act and received benefits from July, 2023, to present. Am I not eligible for benefits from Jan -June 2023 because of GPO? I did not apply because on at least two occasions I was told that I “would never be eligible for anything but the $255 death benefit.” Also my application was dated Feb when I was able to get the first available appt rather than Jan 6 when I first called for an appt.
I would appreciate your insights.

I hate to put it this way, but you’re lucky to get what you’re getting! The system is a mess, and getting worse. I don’t know if you had a pension offset or not, but it would have been worthwhile to apply earlier to find out. But that’s history. Just be grateful that you’re getting a monthly check going forward.
