Social security payment after death

By Terry Savage on March 14, 2025 | Social Security

My husband is the Executor of his Uncles’s estate. Uncle died In December of ‘24. His SS check was auto deposited on November 29th. We know that full month has to go back, but does he write a check or will the SS Admin take it out of the account? If that’s the case, how long does it take? Moved to Florida & miss hearing you. Thanks

Interesting. They do want the money back. The question is whether they will figure it out — and when. Likely the funeral home will report the death to SS. So it may take a few months for htem to react. It’s tempting to just close the bank account of the deceased. But they will contact the executor of the estate (unless they have lost so many employees that they don’t figure it out)!

Probably you should follow the advice in that article and just contact the bank and have them contact SS. Or just wait and see!
