Social SECURITY withheld for SBA loan I didn’t take out!

By Terry Savage on April 03, 2025 | Wild Card

My deposit from social security was debited $334.77, US Treasury Off Set Program.
I called they a Small business loan was taken out in my name and not repaid. It was a scam. I never took out a loan. What can I do? I am 79 years old.

Whew. I think the first thing I would do is call the FBI — 1-800-CALL-FBI and report this. But wait, I have a few steps for you to take first.

So, check your credit report here: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action Pick one of the credit reports (Experian, Equifax or Transunion, since they should all have the same info). See if this shows up as a loan on your credit report.
Then you can dispute it with the credit bureau.

And you can contact the SBA here to report fraud: https://www.sba.gov/partners/contracting-officials/contract-administration/report-fraud-waste-abuse

I am hoping it is only a one-time thing. If it is, it might not be worth your energy fighting it. Honestly, it’s impossible to get through to Social Security or the SBA right now. Everything is such a mess. I know that’s probably a lot of money to you — but your energy might be worth more!
On the other hand, if you find your identity was used for a larger loan, then definitely follow up with the FBI!
