Ask Terry Questions Spousal benefit

Spousal benefit

By Terry Savage on March 22, 2025 | Social Security

Can my wife file for spousal benefits if I am still alive? She is retired from teaching with all her quarters but ss only enough to cover part of her Medicare. I have a 32000 benefit

Terry Says

She will qualify for half your benefit — IF it is larger than her full benefit. And either benefit will no longer be reduced by the WEP.
The problem these days is getting through to SS to claim the benefit.
First, I’d suggest you go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com to find out what she should and could be getting from her own unreduced benefit and half of yours. The $49 cost is well worth it, because they don’t do the calculations correctly at SS.
