Ask Terry Questions Spousal benefits

Spousal benefits

By Terry Savage on March 14, 2025 | Social Security

I’m a retired teacher. Worked enough college jobs to draw a small social security benefit but never received a direct deposit as my pension was too large. Due to recent legislation I received a lump sum from social security and was informed that I would begin receiving a monthly direct deposit. However, 50% of my husband’s benefit that I believe I am now entitled to would be larger than what I am projected to receive. Do I need to apply for spousal benefits or do I assume that will automatically be taken care of through social security personnel?

Terry Says

Now you should apply for spousal benefits. But wait until immediately after you receive the first monthly check.
I hate to say this, but with the reduction in manpower at SS, it might not be easy to get anyone on the phone.
First go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com to see what benefit you would get from your spouse — so you know if the difference is worth the hassle you will go through.
Then just apply online for Spousal Benefits, and keep your fingers crossed that it doesn’t screw things up!
