Spousal benefits
I am trying to find more info on this subject. Can a wife claim their husband’s social security if all parties are alive, married to each other, and they are both 55 years old? Does it deplete the amount the husband is entitled to for social security?
Terry Says
No, no, no. You should EACH wait until your full retirement age. You must wait until age 62 to claim early. But that would be a mistake. If you’re still earning money your SS is reduced. And, You’re going to need the full benefit later in life.
And you each qualify on your own record. If your spouse is alive, the most you can get is half of your spouse’s benefit. So you’ll want to take your own benefit at full retirement age –which for you is 67.
