T-bills and Social Security Fairness Act

By Terry Savage on February 10, 2025 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I have been purchasing t-bills with my “chicken money”. With everything that is happening now, I worry that they may not be safe anymore since I no longer trust the federal government. What are your thoughts?

Also, my husband was an educator and impacted by the WEP and GPO provisions. I feel like this, too, will be impacted by the current administration. Would you recommend going to a Social Security office, or would that be futile at this time?

Terry Says

Your T-bills are safe. If the full faith and credit of the U.S. government is ever impaired, we will have more problems than T-bills!
And if you husband is currently receiving reduced benefits from SS, they will be increased automatically — when they get around to it!
BUT, if he never applied for SS, and has the requisite 40 quarters of earnings, then he should apply immediately.
